On This Day: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Wycombe Wanderers

Remember beating Wycombe Wanderers to secure promotion to the Championship? Well it happened exactly five years ago.

Wednesday had the lead after just twenty-five minutes. The ball fell to Michail Antonio who knocked the ball over the defender’s head, chested it down and finished calmly past Wycombe goalkeeper Nikki Bull.

Nile Rangers doubled the hosts’ advantage just seven minutes into the second half. Chris Lines whipped in a great cross from a free kick and Ranger headed home to make a comeback virtually impossible.

Nile Ranger secured promotion for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“It was hard earned. We were a bit nervous, but the goal settled us and I told them it’s their time if they want it badly enough and they did.

“It was about getting the result, I heard last week the emotions on the bus back were unbelievable.

“I think we knew last week and I think Sheffield United knew that the opportunity had basically turned for us as long as we did it right”.
