Two years ago today, Wednesday managed to grab a point at eventual champions Bournemouth.
It was in fact the Owls who took the lead. Lewis Buxton centred and Kieran Lee’s diving header found the back of the net nine minutes before half-time. The goal meant the Owls want into the interval in front.
Bournemouth’s equaliser was also a header. Yann Kermorgant nodded in twenty-one minutes from time.
Ten minutes later, Simon Francis went in recklessly to Chris Maguire and the hosts were reduced to ten men. However, just six minutes from time, Matt Ritchie was teed up from a free kick and hit an absolute thunderbolt into the top corner – giving Chris Kirkland no chance whatsoever.
Francis dismissal would not be the last piece of controversy in the game. Five minutes into the stoppage time, Athde Nuhiu went down in the area and referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot. Up step Chris Maguire who tucked away the penalty and gave Wednesday a point on the south coast.
